Total Being Yoga will open its doors to Mint Hill Residents on March 1.
Total Being Yoga began in a small, 200 square foot renovated space in owner Mian Rex’s basement last April. Rex isn’t an instructor herself, but she brought instructors in to teach various classes. When demand for classes outgrew her 8-person pace, Rex began to think about expanding.

The new studio, located above DA Salon between the UPS Store and Snap Fitness, is “the perfect location” for Rex, who is excited to partner with several local businesses. “It’s all about relationships,” says Rex. One crucial relationship Rex has already forged is with A Parent’s Time Out, who will offer half-priced child care to Total Being Yoga clients for the hour they are in class. Rex is also working on forming partnerships with neighboring businesses like Snap Fitness and Vintner’s Hill.
Rex only began practicing yoga herself about two years before opening her basement studio, but she was immediately hooked. “I just love yoga and the people who come with it,” says Rex. “The one thing I think everybody’s really scared about is not knowing the poses, and it’s not about that,” says Rex. “It really is the community feel.” Rex recalls the first day she gave yoga a try: “The day I walked in, there was a group of people and they just welcomed me right on the mat. I didn’t feel uncomfortable. I wasn’t scared anymore.”
“Last year I came up with the name Total Being Yoga,” says Rex. “What I’ve learned is it’s the whole mind-body-spirit, the harmony between those three. It’s not about just having that physique. Really sitting there and connecting with others is what I’ve liked about it.”
Rex plans to offer a wide variety of yoga classes. Currently, she plans to schedule classes like kids yoga, mommy and me yoga, and prenatal yoga. Rex also plans to have unique offerings like gentle yoga for the elderly and relaxation yoga for couples. “I hope that people will find that there’s something there for them, and I just don’t want them to be scared,” says Rex. “I want them to understand I’ve been in their shoes.”
As she opens for business, Rex is hoping to get her clients’ feedback on what is and isn’t working and what else they’d like to see. “I really am looking for the community to feel free to give me their feedback, and as we go through this, we will make it work for everybody. It’s important to Rex that she uses Total Being Yoga to tap into what the Mint Hill community wants and make yoga accessible to everyone.
Total Being Yoga will offer a monthly rate for unlimited classes as well as 5- and 10-class passes and walk-in rates. A full schedule of classes and costs is available on the web site (www.totalbeingyoga.com).
Total Being Yoga will offer its first class on March 1 at 6:00 am. Be sure to check out their grand opening event on March 4, where you can try out a free vinyasa or flow class (9:30 and 11:00 respectively) and enjoy a celebration at neighboring Vintner’s Hill with wine and snacks from 1:00 – 3:00.
