MINT HILL, NC – Some people just have a calling for their profession, such is the case for Mike Helms. Many years ago he worked in law enforcement and changed careers for retail management and student ministry. In 2015 he found his way back to law enforcement and in February of 2019 he took the opportunity to join the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Originally from the Charlotte area, Mike wanted to return home and he had heard great things about the leadership, the professionalism and family oriented atmosphere within the UCSO.

While working in law enforcement Mike has earned certification in RADAR, has become a field training officer, is a member of the SWAT team and is currently pursuing supervisory classes to promote to sergeant.

When not working Mike enjoys sports and working out. With eight kids Mike and his wife Jen don’t have a ton of spare time, but when they do they enjoy family activities.  Some of their favorite places to vacation are Ocean Isle or the mountains of North Carolina. Being so busy builds an appetite and Mike says that his favorite food is anything with chicken, but if he is going to splurge it would be pizza.

Despite his hectic schedule, Mike has found a way to prioritize ministry in his life. He says that it is very important to go out into the community to speak and encourage folks. In fact if he were to change careers he would focus on ministry full time.

Deputy Mike Helm’s Community Tip – Keep your garage door shut. Double check before you leave the house or go to bed. Don’t invite criminals in.
