Times will miss Joyce Lavene

It is with great sadness we report the passing of our former Mint Hill Times reporter and friend Joyce Lavene. Joyce reported for our sister paper, The Weekly Post and The Mint Hill Times tirelessly. She attended up to six different town meetings a month for us and reported on them all. She not only covered the news, but wrote features, columns and took photographs. She won several North Carolina Press Association Awards while reporting for us.
Joyce was the employee a business owner feels like they struck gold with finding. Joyce was loyal, intelligent, funny, and talented.
Joyce loved writing. Before she came to write for the paper, she and her husband of 44 years, Jim, were already the authors of more than 30 published mystery novels. Now that number has grown to more than 60.

Kilah Davenport dies at age 4

The young girl who inspired a North Carolina law that increased sentencing for child abusers, died last week. Kilah Davenport, 4, was remembered by friends and family at a memorial in Mint Hill Sunday night. Davenport was abused by her stepfather in 2012 which caused permanent brain-damage.
