Small tax hike could improve schools

The Board of Commissioners heard a presentation on behalf of Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools seeking approval and support for a tax increase that would potentially impact schools across the county.

The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners voted to propose a quarter-cent (1/4 of a penny) sales tax increase on the November 4 ballot.

According to Marinn Bengel of Together4Meck, who made the presentation, this small increase would potentially provide an additional $35 million per year to the revenue for Mecklenburg County.

“County commissioners will direct 80 percent of the revenue generated by the increase to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools,” Bengel explained, “7.5 percent will go to Central Piedmont Community College. Another 7.5 percent to the Arts and Science Council and 5 percent to the counties public libraries.”  […]

10th Annual afternoon in the park to be held

In 2004 Mint Hill Commissioner Tina Ross wanted an opportunity for local artist to showcase their talents and skills, while interacting with locals. To that end she helped organized the very first Afternoon in the Park.

‘ASC believes in Mint Hill’ – Chili event brings praises from Arts and Science Council

The annual chili cook off was held at Spotlight on the Arts on February 27 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.

Participants came equipped with crockpots full to the brim and accoutrements of every variety.

Oyster crackers, tomatoes, sour cream, breadsticks, shredded cheese. The possibilities were as endless as the flavors of chili and creative names.

Czec Chili, submitted by Gina Hall Luckie, promoted itself as The World’s Really, Really BEST Chili.

With names like Smokin’ Gatorchili, Death from Within, and New Kids on the Block Kickin’ Chili, folks who like it spicy were surely pleased. […]
