It turns out the third time was not the charm for the Mint Hill Army Juniors American Legion baseball team.
The team used a mid-season push to reel off 11 consecutive wins, turning an unassuming 5-5 beginning into a 16-5 record that had them poised to make a deep run in the legion playoffs.
With its momentum and late-season surge, the Army won the regional championship and was in high spirits as the team headed to Granite Falls to take on Davidson County.
But it didn’t go as planned.
“We had a real good practice three days before we left,” said coach Dan Kerr, who is Queen’s Grant’s athletics director, head baseball coach and guided the 2013 Army to the state title. “We were playing really well, everyone was really high on our chances, we were working as a team and then I’m not sure what happened other than saying we lost those games we didn’t get beat.
