U.S. House Representative Sue Myrick released this video about the recent ruling by a Virginia judge who said the health coverage mandate in the new health care bill is unconstitutional. Other judges have ruled so far that it is constitutional, and the issue seems destined to move on to the Supreme Court.

Myrick argues that the mandate to buy health insurance violates the Interstate Commerce Clause in the Constitution.

Obama said the mandate is necessary because it helps to bring healthy people into the pool of the insured, thus lowering the rates for everyone. Under the Obama plan, if someone doesn’t buy health insurance, either through a private company or through the so-called health care exchanges, then they will be penalized with a tax.

Myrick disagrees.

“It’s wrong that the government now has the power to punish the American people for not purchasing a product, in this case, health insurance,” said Myrick.

Sue Myrick (N.C. 9) voted against the DREAM Act last night, citing loopholes that will lead to amnesty for illegal immigrants. Myrick is the U.S. Representative for the Charlotte area, including Mint Hill.

“The DREAM Act is amnesty, plain and simple,” she said. “Once an illegal alien applies for citizenship under this bill, the government is prohibited from deporting him or her – no matter how fraudulent the claim – providing safe harbor and a pathway to amnesty for millions.”

The DREAM Act passed in the House by a vote of 216 – 198. However, it’s not expected to pass in the U.S. Senate.

For a good debate on the pluses and minuses of the DREAM Act, watch this video.

US Representative Sue Myrick (NC-09) today praised the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for their decision to make illegal the possession or sale of synthetic marijuana and the chemicals used to manufacture this substance.

Earlier this month, Rep. Myrick wrote a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder urging the Department of Justice to prevent the distribution of this product, also known as “Spice” or “K2.”

“Given the unknown health risks associated with this new drug, I ask that you use any of your authorities – including adding this compound to the schedule of controlled substances – to prevent the distribution of this product. Continue reading »

If you are Sue Myrick, this is about the highlight of the election season: Voting early at the library. That’s because barring a catastrophe, she will easily get reelected to represent the 9th District for Congress. Myrick is so confident in her reelection that she’s hardly spent a penny on advertising. Her opponent, Jeff Doctor of Charlotte, seems like a capable candidate. But the suburbs and Gastonia are Myrick country and until she decides to retire, it’s safe to say she will keep getting reelected. Photographer Ed McDonald grabbed these shots of Myrick as she was coming out of the library after voting.

Rep. Sue Myrick got an endorsement for re-election from  the Americans for Legal Immigration Political Action Committee (ALIPAC) this week.

According to the press release from Myrick’s office, she “received ALIPAC’s endorsement based on her support for the new immigration law in Arizona, increasing border security and enforcing the Rule of Law.”

Said Myrick: “Illegal immigration is about our national security, and it’s an issue that grows more serious every day,” said Myrick. “We need to enforce our immigration laws, know who is in our country, and make sure that people who are here illegally aren’t rewarded for breaking the law.”

It really shouldn’t come as a surprise that congresswoman Sue Myrick has been endorsed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Political Action Committee for re-election to the House of Representatives.  In an official letter from the VFW-PAC, Myrick’s endorsement is based on her “strong support for veterans, national security and defense, and military personnel issues.” Continue reading »

Sue Myrick, who represents the Mint Hill area in the U.S. House of Representatives, released this video today bemoaning the U.S. Homeland Security for not taking seriously the threat of Hezbollah entering the country illegally along the Mexico border. The narrator of the video cites anecdotal evidence, while the Director of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, says there is no credible threat. Hezbollah has attacked American interests around the world, but has never directly threatened inside our own borders. Is Myrick correct that more attention should be paid to terrorism on the Mexican border?

Rep. Sue Myrick announced today the launching of her very own IPhone app. The app synchronizes with her website content and provides instant access to videos, updates on current legislation, events and tour information. Constituents can also contact Rep. Myrick directly using the app.

Myrick is one of the first Congressmen to have a mobile phone application. Yesterday, Congressman Chaka Fattah became the first Democrat with an app in the House.

For Myrick, it’s another way to further her reputation as an accessible Congressman.

“It’s always been a priority to keep in touch with constituents, and the iPhone app is a great way to communicate,” Rep. Myrick said. Continue reading »

Sue Myrick and 75 other members of of the House and Senate filed a brief is support of the Arizona immigration law. The Department of Justice is in the process of blocking Arizona from such a law, arguing that it is the federal government’s role to enforce immigration laws.

Says Myrick:

“Arizona has the right and the responsibility to protect itself and its citizens,” Rep. Myrick said. “It is clear that the federal government is not taking the steps necessary to secure our border, and make sure that immigration laws are enforced. The Arizona immigration law in question is perfectly legal and complies with the intent of Congress that the states assist in the enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws.”

Meanwhile, the first court hearing in the Obama administration’s lawsuit against Arizona’s new immigration law is taking place today.

Myrick, along with 179 of her colleagues, sent a letter to House and Senate leaders stating opposition to an amendment that would allow abortions on U.S. Military Bases. There are two sides to this: Federal law says that abortion is a woman’s choice. However, should taxpayers have to foot the bill for something they find morally wrong? Not according to Myrick and many others. Continue reading »

US Representative Sue Myrick (NC-09) has always been one of the most vocal critics of illegal immigrants in this country. So it should not come as a surprise that last week she disagreed with Obama’s speech on immigration.

This week’s Mint Hill Times editorial calls for a practical solution to the immigration problem that is more akin to what Fox News founder Rupert Murdoch wants: Set up a program that will allow the current illegals some level of legal status, and then restructure immigration laws so that we never again have this problem. Who else is on board with this idea? In addition to Murdoch and Obama, Michael Bloomberg (and many other CEOS and Mayors), George W. Bush, Karl Rove, Trent Lott, Ken Mehlman, former chairman, Republican National Committee, and Republican strategist Michael Murphy. Continue reading »
