Librarians and high fashion will collide next weekend. The Charlotte Mecklenburg library is teaming with Neiman Marcus department store to raised funds via a raffle. The prizes—other than the satisfaction of donating to the library—include a stay at the Ritz Carlton hotel, a $500 gift card from Neiman Marcus, and a private wine tasting for 12 people. The library hopes to make $20,000 via the raffle.

Neiman Marcus chose Charlotte Mecklenburg Library as the charitable beneficiary for its Fashion’s Night Out event on Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m.  Winners of the raffle will be announced at the free event, but they do not have to be present to win. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased on-line by visiting www.cmlibrary.org/raffle. Tickets can also be purchased at the event or at any of the 20 library locations.

Interested in attending Fashion’s Night Out? Reserve your spot at the event by emailing RSVPCharlotte@NeimanMarcus.com.

Birthday Blessings is one of 13 charities which will adorn the Jimmie Johnson Foundation Samsung Helmet of Hope at Auto Club Speedway in October. Birthday Blessings was co-founded by Mint Hill residents John and Amy Cervantes, and provides birthday parties to homeless children. They also will also receive a $10,000 grant from the Johnson Foundation. The organization was nominated by Terri Springer of Matthews.

“Birthday Blessings is a fantastic nonprofit dedicated to serving homeless children,” explained Springer. “Birthday Blessings is a new charity (whose demand) keeps growing due to the economy. “I started volunteering in 2008 and since I began my family has been part of it too. Logan, my 10 year old, loves to go and help. He helps at some parties and watched as one boy blew out his candles. The boy didn’t know how to do it because he had never had candles on his cake before. Logan was very touched by that and hopes that all children can celebrate their birthdays. The organization not only provides smiles but gives the children a moment of normalcy in a time when it isn’t normal.”

From May 3 through June 12, members of the Mint Hill community can join BI-LO in supporting local non-profit.

Customers can make donations to BI-LO Charities’ fundraising efforts by adding $1 or more to their grocery bill. These donations stay in the Mint Hill community and help our neighbors who are in need.

Each local BI-LO location has identified a local charity to support with the funds raised. The BI-LO store located at 9108 Lawyers Road is raising funds for Mint Hill Lions Club.

“Our store teams are passionate about getting involved in the communities where they work and live. This commitment to our neighbors in need has always been part of BI-LO’s culture,” said BI-LO Charities Executive Director Carol Browning. Continue reading »

The Mint Hill Times wrote about the husband and wife team Allan and Gail Beisiegel, members of Blair Road United Methodist Church in Mint Hill, who were in Haiti on an annual mission trip when the earthquake struck last month. They worked with the St. Joesph Family, an organization which helps boys who live on the streets as well as kids with disabilities. Here’s the organization’s latest video: Then and Now.

On Thursday, October 15, more than 150 Belk employees came together at its Charlotte corporate headquarters to celebrate the first anniversary of the company’s Women’s Leadership Network.  The event kicked off a corporate collection drive to benefit the programs of Birthday Blessings, a Mint Hill-based nonprofit that brings birthday joy and support to homeless children.  Belk and its employees donated a total of $2,500 in financial and product donations.

John and Amy Cervantes, Birthday Blessings co-founders, were recognized at the event for their volunteer efforts on behalf of homeless children and families.  John gave a brief presentation about the organization, and volunteers were on hand after the event to provide additional information and answer questions.

“We are truly overwhelmed by the generosity of Belk and its employees,” said Birthday Blessings volunteer executive director and co-founder, Amy Cervantes. Continue reading »

Both Philadelphia Presbyterian Church and Levine Senior Center hosted bazaars on Saturday. The church bazaar was the 39th for the women of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church according to Susan Griffin. In addition to the bazaar, there was a breakfast,  chicken pot pie dinner, silent auction, and a yard sale on the front lawn of the church. The Levine Senior Center was taken over Saturday by the bazaar as cars overflowed the parking lot. They even had to have valet parking at one point. Books, quilts, crafts, raffles and baked goods were just some of the offerings during the day. Click the link below for photos of the Philadelphia Presbyterian Church bazaar. Continue reading »
