Mint Hill tables vote on four town alliance

The Mint Hill Board of Commissioners voted to pass on adopting bylaws, articles of incorporation and selecting town members for a Four-Town Economic Development Alliance.

“I have concerns over some of these bylaws,” said Mayor Ted H. Biggers, “I recommend we send these back with our recommendations.”

Almost two year ago, the town of Mint Hill met with town officials in Matthews, Indian Trail and Stallings to discuss the advantages of forming a joint economic development initiative.

For the next year a representative from each town and each town manager met to explore the benefits and potential disadvantages of a partnership.

Two key issues were identified; regionalized marketing and branding and the development of a joint business park or buildings.

In December of 2013 a draft plan was created. That plan was presented to the Mint Hill Board of Commissioners earlier this month and was met with mixed feelings.

Biggers said that he had particular concerns about the voting process and said that clarification was necessary. Town Commissioner Tina Ross also had areas of concern.

“I’m confused about the difference between membership and the board of directors,” Ross said. Ross then made a motion to withhold an approval vote which passed unanimously.

In other matters

• Heidi Pruess was present to highlight progress of the Mecklenburg County Livable Communities Plan initiative. Pruess invited the Mint Hill Board of Commissioners to become involved and insert “their voice” into the plan. The Livable Communities Plan involves investigating and implementing programs to help with quality of life, green spaces and managing growing communities

Several local Boy Scouts were on hand to record the meeting as part of their communication requirements. Mayor Bigger brought the boys forward and each introduced themselves.

• Commissioners heard a report on the recent Mint Hill Madness event. The event which raises money was attended by thousands this year and the three day festivities flowed smoothly thanks to local fire and police involvement.

• Commissioner Ross reported that she had recently attended the volunteer fire department dinner and offered praise for all members.

Anchor stores announced for newly approved commercial building

According to George Dunn from Gem-Cap properties, both tenants in the newly approved commercial building between Jimmie’s Restaurant and Wendy’s have committed.  On the end of the building with the outside patio will be Jersey Mike’s, and the other side will house a Sherwin Williams Design Center and Paint Store.

“This is more of a residential venture,” says Dunn, “as opposed to a commercial paint store. The emphasis will be on residential design ideas and paint for the home.”

According to Dunn, construction should begin the first of August. “We have our plans into Mecklenburg County for approval,” says Dunn.

Plans indicate the project will be completed and stores open this year.

Novant meets with Mint Hill residents about planned hospital at I-485 and Albemarle Road

Novant say it is still on track to open a hospital at the intersection of I-485 and Albemarle Road, but the plans have been downsized. Novant submitted plans in 2008 for a hospital with 100 beds and 140,000 square feet of medical office space. Now the healthcare organization has submitted a new zoning application to include 50 beds and 80,000 square feet for medical offices.

The hospital would still contain 16 emergency bays, as well as space for rehabilitation, maternity services, and cardiovascular services. It woulda also have a laboratory and pharmacy. The zoning request includes 25,000 square feet for retail and restaurant space.  Continue reading

Novant Health could open in Mint Hill by 2018

Novant Health hopes to open a hospital in Mint Hill by the beginning of 2018, a project that has been delayed since 2008. The company took a step forward in the process by filing a rezoning application at the end of April. This process could take six months, but if all continues as planned, they anticipate breaking ground at the end of 2015.

“We’re very excited about it. We really feel good that it’s the right thing to do for the community of Mint Hill and surrounding areas to have their hometown hospital,” said Roland Bibeau, president of Novant Health’s Matthews Medical Center. Continue reading

New home building increasing steadily in Mint Hill

New home building has really been on an upswing in Mint Hill this year, with price points set for a moderate budget.

In April 2012, only 62 new home permits were issued in all of Mecklenburg County.

April 2014 shows a very different picture with 229 housing permits issued throughout the month.

So far this year, 837 permits have been issued for new homes.

While some of these new Mint Hill neighborhoods were taken over from previous builders who lost their property to foreclosure during the economic downturn, there are new properties being developed all over the area. Continue reading

Commissioners say no to 7-Eleven

Residents of Mint Lake Village came out in Screen Shot 2013-10-03 at 2.53.20 PMlarge numbers, sporting matching I Love Mint Hill tee shirts, to weigh in once more on the decision to allow the construction of the 24-hour establishment, citing concerns over potential decrease in property values, increased traffic with the “chaotic” roundabout, and crime.  Continue reading
