Independence students celebrate global youth service day

Continue projects to serve the children of South Sudan

April 11 was Global Youth Service Day, and students in the Academy of International Studies (AIS) at Independence High School celebrated their successes in helping to provide a school and clean drinking water for the children of South Sudan.

For the past three years AIS students have been working to raise awareness and funds for children living in substandard conditions in a tiny country in northeastern Africa.

“In 2011, we held a spaghetti dinner and raised $1,500 for the school in South Sudan,” says senior Rachel Casale, who is president of the Interact Club. “In 2012, we sponsored the Carry the Jerry 5K to help fund clean water at the school, and we raised $2,000.”

Casale explained to the attentive crowd that in 2013, AIS students participated in the Any1Can Project where over 2,000 area students designed t-shirts raising awareness about a variety of global issues such as peace, education, water conservation, tolerance, hunger, and poverty. […]

Shredding service convenient for citizens

The Mint Hill Police Department and the Mint Hill Chamber of Commerce hosted a document shredding event in the parking lot of Fifth Third Bank on Saturday, April 12. This semi-annual service is provided free of charge as a way to encourage citizens to destroy documents containing personal information that could be used by criminals intent on committing identity theft.

CINTAS Document Management was on site with two trucks to immediately shred the documents. The shredded paper will later be recycled into secondary paper products such as paper towels and tissue.

By 10:15 am Saturday, over 6,000 pounds of paper had already been shredded, and the line for dropping off paper was steady and stretched around the building. […]

Rocky River apparel development students win top honors at fashion event

On February 22nd and March 1st, Rocky River High School’s Honors Apparel Development II Class won first and second place with a $600.00 prize for the best use of recyclable materials at The Recycle the Runway Event held at the Southern Spring Home and Garden Show in the Park Expo and Conference Center.

Seventeen students from the class designed and created the four winning garments.  The winners were chosen based on entries that incorporated the largest amount of recyclable materials.

Charlotte Solid Waste Services, Waste Reduction in Mecklenburg County, and MGR Youth Empowerment sponsored this event.   […]
