Mint Hill Legion Baseball summer season gets underway

The Mint Hill Marines Juniors took on the Huntersville Huskies in their second conference game of the season on Monday.

The summer season has started up for the Mint Hill Legion Baseball teams. The season will continue through the month of June with playoffs beginning on July 1. This year Mint Hill will host the Junior Legion Area 4 semi-finals on July 5, 6 and 7 and the finals on July 11, 12, and 13 at Independence High School.

“Like I told them today, ‘Right now we’re the ingredients and we’ve got to blend you into a team,’” said Coach Kelly Moore. He said the team this year is comprised of younger players than last year’s team, which had 11 members go on to play college baseball. “That just makes our jobs as coaches more fun,” he said. “We’ve got big shoes to fill from last year.”  Continue reading

Christmas Party

The Mint Hill Chamber of Com- merce and Charlotte Medical Clinic are presenting the Senior Christmas Party Saturday, December 1 at Independence High School. Gifts for seniors, prizes, and goodie bags for volunteers are still needed. Contact Mike Cochrane at 704-573-6547.

Tree lighting

The Town of Mint Hill will be hosting its annual tree lighting and open house December 2. Open house will be from 3- 5:30 pm, and the tree lighting will follow, at 5:45 pm.

Festival of Trees

Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews is presenting “Festival of Trees 2012” November 29, from 6-8 pm in the hospital lobby. The festival will feature live holiday music, hot cider, a silent auction, and Santa Claus.

Mint Hill’s American Legion senior baseball team played rival Union County last week at Wingate and Butler.  With a promising start to Friday’s game at Butler, Mint Hill lost 5-6.  After the Union County game June 22, VFW Post 4059’s record was 13-5. The regular season ended June 26, and the playoffs begin July 1.

Mint Hill forces a game five against Caldwell County

Mint Hill is still alive. After falling behind 0-2 in a best-of-five Area IV playoff series against Caldwell County, Mint Hill has won the last two to push the series to a decisive game five tonight at Caldwell County.

Mint Hill got a little help from mother nature in Thursday’s win at Butler High School. After leading 7-3 in the fifth inning, a thunderstorm forced the game to be called after more than an hour delay.

Brandon McWhirter struck out five in getting the win for Mint Hill.

Mint Hill Army will live to see another day. After two disappointing losses to Caldwell County where they were outscored by a combined 25-13, Mint Hill’s bats came alive Wednesday to stave off elimination. Mint Hill beat Caldwell County 13-9, and brought the series back to Butler High School tonight at 7 pm for game four. Caldwell County has a 2 games to 1 edge on Mint Hill in the best of five series.

 

The winner of the series will face Hickory in the Area IV playoffs. Hickory swept No. 1 seeded
