Novant Health hopes to open a hospital in Mint Hill by the beginning of 2018, a project that has been delayed since 2008. The company took a step forward in the process by filing a rezoning application at the end of April. This process could take six months, but if all continues as planned, they anticipate breaking ground at the end of 2015.
“We’re very excited about it. We really feel good that it’s the right thing to do for the community of Mint Hill and surrounding areas to have their hometown hospital,” said Roland Bibeau, president of Novant Health’s Matthews Medical Center.
The 50-bed hospital will sit on nearly 82 acres of land at Albemarle Road and 485. The facility will also include an emergency department with 16 bays as well as a lab and pharmacy. Patients will have access to maternity, cardiovascular, and rehabilitation services. Also included in the plans is a medical office building that will house other medical services and physician practices. The campus would have the potential to expand in the future as well.
In spite of delays due to economic downturns, Novant has added three medical practices to the area over the last year and a half. All located within the I-485 corridor, these locations will support the hospital once it is completed.
