This past Thursday, it was the old guard versus the new guard. Independence has established itself as a perennial power and West Meck was hoping to show that last year’s playoff run was not a fluke. The Patriots tried to go for the two point conversion but it was no good. West Meck seven, Indy six. During the next possession for the West Meck Hawks, star running back Shaun Wilson coughed the ball up and Independence’s Tim Marshall recovered the ball on the West Meck 46 yard line. Not too long after that, Patriot QB Kelvin Hopkins avoids a rush, heaves the ball 45 yards to Workpeh Kofa, who marches in for the score. Game Previews
Independence(3-1, 0-0)
at Hough (3-0, 0-0)
Kickoff at 7 pm
Independence will have it last non-conference test when it travels to Cornelius to take on the Hough Huskies.
“We have to get a lot better. We have to focus on all three phases of the game: offense, defense and special teams,” said Evans of his team’s preparations this week for Hough.
Independence will need to work on ball control and time of possession if they hope to win against Hough. The Huskies have a solid offensive line and a good QB. The Huskies defense will be equally tough especially in the secondary. Independence needs to look for short screen passes and more plays in the middle of the field rather than big yardage pass plays. If they can do this, that should open up the running game which will control the ball and clock in their favor. Both teams have a lot of depth on both sides of the ball and this should be a close game that could go either way.
Rocky River (3-1, 0-0) at Marvin Ridge (1-2, 0-0)
Kickoff at 7:30 pm
Rocky River defeated Gastonia Huss last week and the Marvin Ridge Mavericks put a 70-6 beat down on Pender last week. The Mavericks are adjusting to new head coach, Danny Bailey. They do return a solid core of RB’s and WR’s but it looks like things stop there.
Rocky River should have too much depth and be able to come away with a win against Marvin Ridge.
