Nova’s Bakery, based in Charlotte, recently purchased the Dilworth Coffee House location at the Hoods Crossroads Shopping Center in Mint Hill.

Bringing their specialty breads, pastries and other baked goods to Mint Hill, this move marks only the most recent expansion for Nova’s, who opened a new location in Charlotte’s South End neighborhood last August.

Sladjana and Vlado Novakovic started Nova’s Bakery on South Boulevard in Charlotte in 1996, and after needing a larger production facility, moved to Central Avenue a few years later, where their headquarters are located today.

Just a few weeks ago, Nova’s purchased the location at Hoods Crossroads, after realizing that much of their weekend patronage consisted of customers commuting 20 to 30 minutes from the Matthews/ Mint Hill area, to get bread and other baked goods from Nova’s.

The new location will still feature the coffee from Dilworth Coffee Company that customers already enjoy, as do the other Nova’s locations, but with breads and baked goods delivered daily from the Central Avenue location.

Tanja Novakovic, daughter of the founders is serving as store manager of the new location, and said that things are going well so far.

Tanja said the staff staying on from Dilworth is working with the new staff from Nova’s, teaching them the ins and outs of the coffee side, while the staff coming from Nova’s is teaching them about the ins and outs of the pastries and bread side.

Some of the most popular items are the “Glorious Morning Muffins,” a carrot-cake style muffin featuring carrots, apples, raisins and pecans, cranberry scones, feta and spinach scones with a red pepper kick, and of course, the breads: the very popular cranberry walnut, dark ryes, paisanos, and other traditional European breads.

The breads only stay on the shelf for one day, after which they are donated to local food banks like Loaves and Fishes and Second Harvest.

Nova’s has a Facebook page, facebook.com/NovasBakery, where any special deals or promotions will be listed, and the next thing coming up at the Mint Hill location is Coffee with a Cop, on July 8.

Coffee with a Cop will feature members of the Mint Hill Police Department, meeting with community members starting at 7 am to discuss issues and, of course, drink coffee.

  1. I was recently in this store, and I was not impressed. The staff seemed unhappy to be there, they took 45 minutes to get our bagel, and it was the wrong one. The girl that brought out the correct one never apologized for the mix up or the wait. There was a line out the door, so I know that they have obviously impressed others. This was my second visit there and we raved about the breakfast and coffee from our first experience. Needless to say we probably won’t be back for breakfast, but the bread selection is great. May stop in just for that.
