Bringing Thanksgiving to those in need

This year, the members of the Mint Hill Madness Beauty Pageant are bringing the spirit of Thanksgiving to those in need.

Bringing together all the necessities of a Thanksgiving meal, from whole turkeys to sides and desserts, pageant members gathered food to bring homeless families a full Thanksgiving.

This is the second year the pageant has donated Thanksgiving meals to those in need, and this year, eight families will be getting a meal; seven receiving laundry baskets full of food, and one, without the ability to cook, receiving a gift certificate to Cracker Barrel.

Economic development center of discussion at commission meeting

Two agenda items, focused on economic development in Mint Hill, took center stage at the town commission’s meeting November 15.

“This is about industrial development from the standpoint of bringing jobs and tax base to the Mint Hill area,” said Dale Stewart, of Aberdeen, Carolina and Western Railroad.

The petition would be a step toward streamlining the process for new industry to come to the business park, separating an area for rail use only, and preparing that area for rail-based industries.

Mint Hill resident sending Christmas spirit to Jersey Shore

Renee Ribera moved to Mint Hill from Fords, New Jersey 20 years ago but as the largest Atlantic hurricane on record made landfall on the shore of her home state on October 29, it definitely struck home.

“It breaks my heart that the shore won’t be the same,” Ribera said. “It will never be the same again.”

Hurricane Sandy caused at least $20 billion in damage and caused power outages from Maine to Manhattan to North Carolina.

After the hurricane, Ribera began to figure out a way to help.

“It got me immediately thinking, what can we do, we’re here, everybody’s fine, we have power, we have resources,” Ribera said.
