The fourth annual Rock a thon event was held at the Levine Senior Center last Saturday. The cause was to raise money for the center and its programs. There were crafts, virtual bowling, food and music. This is one of the center’s prority events according to Barbara Guthrie, assiatnt director. “We work on this all year long,” she said. “People bake. make crafts, donate crafts, all to support the center.” Continue reading »
Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s Matthews Branch hosted its second annual Winter Celebration to honor volunteers on Sunday, February 12. Two volunteers, Feiwen Walker and Peggy Dixon, received the Ed Maag Volunteer of the Year Award for their dedication as volunteers for 2011. They each received an engraved glass star. Last week, an old problem was brought to the forefront of people’s minds once again. Four teenagers were questioned by Mecklenburg County Police after a fire was started at the Ram Leather Care building on Albemarle Road. All four were charged with trespassing. More than 50 people turned out for an event billed as an education conversation on Monday night. Mint Hill Mayor Ted Biggers and Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor hosted the event at the Matthews Town Hall. The Armed Forces Museum & Archives of the Carolinas have a new set of board members. The group voted last month at its regular meeting at the Mint Hill Town Hall. The museum and archive will be constructed next to the North Carolina Korean War Veterans Memorial at the Park on Fairview.
AFMAC is a a 501(c)(3) entity that will honor, preserve and celebrate freedom. This world-class museum, scheduled to break ground in 2014, will be unique in that it will honor all five branches of the United States military: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. When completed, visitors will experience an educational showcase of 250 years of military history combined with the home front support and sacrifices that have made our nation great. Sue Myrick announced today she will not seek another term representing District 9 in the U.S. Congress. She has represented the 9th District since 1995. Here’s the statement she released on Facebook today:
“After thoughtful discussion with my family, I have decided not to run for another term in Congress. I’m grateful for the privilege of serving you. We have all been blessed by staff members who truly care and delight in helping to solve problems for everyone in the district. Thanks for the trust you have placed in us all these years. We will spend the rest of the year working on the issues that are important to all of you – and I hope to be a positive influence in all our negotiations. I hope you will join me in praying that God will heal our nation. May God bless you and your family.”
Former Independence High School football coach Tom Knotts was invited to the Super Bowl last weekend by Giants’ receiver Hakeem Nicks. Knotts coached Nicks at Independence during the record-setting win streak in the mid 2000s. Nicks, who caught 10 passes in the game, posed with Knotts after the win.
Knotts texted words of encouragement after the game to another NFL wide receiver he coached in high school, Mohamed Massaquoi of the Cleveland Browns. According to Massaquoi on Twitter, Knotts said, ”You’re next–get me there.”
