The Town of Matthews will introduce its new roll-out recycling containers in early August. All households in the Town will receive one new green roll-out recycling cart. The carts are 96 gallons and will be collected every other week on the same day as their garbage collection day. Garbage collection will still happen every week and on the same schedule. There is no charge for the first cart.
There are several benefits to having an every other week roll-out cart recycling program.
“The carts are easier for citizens to maneuver, have a lid which prevents littering and hold more than the small bins we now use,” said Matthews Town Manager Hazen Blodgett. “We will also save money by only collecting recycling every other week which means fewer trucks on the road and less air pollution.”
The Town contracts with Republic to collect its garbage and recycling. Both garbage and recycling collection will now be done with automated trucks. The trucks will use a mechanical arm to lift the carts and dump them into the trucks.
“With this system it is very important to have your cart wheels face your home, and keep the carts three feet apart from each other,” said Matthews Public Works Director Ralph Messera.
The schedule for implementation of the program is:
Week of July 18 and 25 – The new recycling carts will be delivered to residences in Matthews.
Week of August 1 – Fill your old recycling bin with your recyclables. The old bins and recyclables will be collected. The old bins will be recycled.
Week of August 8 – Residents will begin using the new roll-out recycling carts.
Information regarding the new program will be mailed to all residents and information will also be attached to the carts when they are delivered. If you have any questions call the Matthews Public Works Department at 704-847-3640.
