Chris Leak set many records as quarterback for Independence High School in the early 2000s. One mark, passing for 585 yards in a game in 2002, was recently broken by Will Cooper, quarterback of Broughton High School last year.
The record, however, was recently challenged by the Raleigh News and Observer who reviewed the game film and found that Cooper passed for 15 yards less than what was originally recorded. That means Cooper actually tied Leak’s mark.
Because it is nearly impossible to check high school football stats, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association will probably allow Cooper to keep the record, however. As Bobby Guthrie, the Wake County Schools athletic director and a member of the NCHSAA board said:

“How do we know the Charlotte [record] is correct? Is Chris Leak’s record any more valid than what the Cooper boy did?”
