Work is underway to plant more than 600 trees on the Four Mile Creek Greenway in Matthews. The trees will be planted along Four Mile Creek and will deter erosion of the stream bank. The trees will be of various sizes and species and will be planted over the next couple of weeks. They should be in place for the official opening ceremony of the greenway on Saturday, April 9 from 10 am to 1 pm.
A short dedication ceremony will be held at 10 am at the Old Public Works facility located less than a quarter mile from the greenway entrance directly off Trade Street. Immediately following the ceremony, there will be interactive activities and entertainment along the greenway. Additionally, a bicycle safety rodeo for children will be held by Matthews Police Officers, in the parking lot behind Matthews Elementary School.
The greenway is a $1.6M joint project between the Town of Matthews and Mecklenburg County. Trail A is from East John St. to Brenham Lane and Trail B is from S. Trade Street to Squirrel Lake Park. Trail A and B are a combined two miles in length.
