Thornton memorial service wrap up

Fred Thornton, the CMPD officer who was killed last week in Mint Hill when a “flash-bang” device exploded in his garage, was honored at a memorial service in Charlotte yesterday. Fox Charlotte spoke to several of his colleagues as well as those who lined the street to honor the fallen officer.

WCNC also talks to fellow officers who say that Thornton was an average guy who loved his family, the Carolina Panthers, Coors Light and his motorcycle.

Cierra Burdick named a finalist for national player of the year

It’s a bittersweet day for Butler’s Cierra Burdick. Last night, the Lady Bulldogs lost to Mallard Creek 50-45 in the state playoffs, snapping a 42-game win streak and ending the Lady Bulldog’s chance of winning back-to-back state titles. It’s one of the biggest upsets in Mecklenburg County high school basketball history.
Today, Burdick was named one of the four finalists for the McDonald’s All American National Player of the Year award. Others on the list are Ariel Massengale (Bolingbrook High School — Bolingbrook, Ill.), Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (Mater Dei High School — Santa Ana, Calif.) and Elizabeth Williams (Princess Anne High School — Virginia Beach, Va.).
