The closing of schools is a hot topic in Mecklenburg County, but mostly for those who live on the West side of the county where schools aren’t nearly as crowded as the ‘burbs. Parents and students are protesting the possibility of Harding or Waddell closing even though Waddell has 1,000 students and Harding has 590. Butler and Independence each have more students than those schools combined. Myers Park has four times the students as Harding. CMS Board members have seemed to cave to pressure in recent weeks, so tonight should be an interesting meeting at the Government Center. The CMS press release:
CMS is expecting a large turnout for the Nov. 9 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education meeting held at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center (600 East Fourth Street, meeting chamber) at 6 p.m. The doors to the chamber will open at 5:30 p.m. for the public (seating is first come, first serve). The Board meeting will also air on CMS TV (Time Warner Cable channel 3).
The Board has been conducting a series of meetings and forums since June as part of its comprehensive review of CMS. The Board is scheduled to vote on the proposed school changes at the Nov. 9 meeting. To view the proposals, click here.
There will be a public hearing on the proposed recommendations to the comprehensive review. In order to accommodate all guests who want to speak at the Board meeting, there will be a two-minute time limit for each speaker. Please call the Board of Education Office at 980-343-5139 by noon, Nov. 9, to register.
