It has been a great season for the American Legion Teams in Mint Hill. The Junior team was just one win away from going to the state tournament in Cary until Belmont beat them 10-4 Saturday.

For 40 years, the Mint Hill Team was known as “Newell” because of their association with the Newell VFW. This year, they were officially called “Mint Hill” because of their sponsorship by Mint Hill VFW Post 4059. Here are some pictures from Saturday’s game. Photos are by Tim Long.

March 11, 1982 was a milestone for Mint Hill. Yes, it was 11 years to the day that Mint Hill was incorporated. But it was also the day that John McEwen and wife Scottie donated 5.5 acres to the town for its first town hall. Previously, the board had met in a barber shop, doctor’s office, and fire department.

In this week’s Mint Hill Times, read about the donation of the land. In next week’s issue, we look at why the town hall looks so modern, and why it was one of the first eco-friendly buildings in the area. To see the agenda from that 1982 board meeting, click after the break. Thanks to Town Clerk Beth Hamrick for digging this up for us.

US Representative Sue Myrick (NC-09) has always been one of the most vocal critics of illegal immigrants in this country. So it should not come as a surprise that last week she disagreed with Obama’s speech on immigration.

This week’s Mint Hill Times editorial calls for a practical solution to the immigration problem that is more akin to what Fox News founder Rupert Murdoch wants: Set up a program that will allow the current illegals some level of legal status, and then restructure immigration laws so that we never again have this problem. Who else is on board with this idea? In addition to Murdoch and Obama, Michael Bloomberg (and many other CEOS and Mayors), George W. Bush, Karl Rove, Trent Lott, Ken Mehlman, former chairman, Republican National Committee, and Republican strategist Michael Murphy. Continue reading »
