Harrisburg honors fallen soldier; Mint Hill will do the same Saturday

Area Harrisburg residents turned out yesterday to honor Chris Barton, a member of the 101st who was killed in Afghanistan May 24. Barton’s body was flown in from Dover Air Force Base to Concord Airport yesterday. The funeral will be held in Mint Hill on Saturday. Mint Hill Mayor Ted Biggers has asked residents to line Matthews-Mint Hill Road tomorrow at 11:30 am as the funeral procession goes from McEwen Funeral Home to Idlewild Road and then Idlewild Road Baptist Church. According to the Indpendent-Tribune, hundreds lined the streets in Harrisburg yesterday. Barton’s family was grateful.

“It was overwhelming,” said Roy Schmiedeshoff, Chris’ father. “I knew they were doing something, but I didn’t know it was going to be this big.
