Help the postal service ‘stamp out hunger’ tomorrow

This Saturday, May 8, letter carriers in Charlotte and surrounding areas will again help Stamp Out Hunger! across America with your help in order to provide assistance to the rapidly increasing number of Americans who are struggling with hunger.

Now in its 18th year, the Stamp Out Hunger effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. In 2010, drive organizers hope to exceed last year’s record-setting total of 73.4 million pounds of donated food, as well as surpass one billion pounds of food collected over the history of the drive. Mint Hill FD volunteer wins a Ford F150

Bryan Hancock, a volunteer with the Mint Hill Fire Department and a paid employee with the City of Monroe Fire Department won a new Ford F150 truck, delivered this week by the executive director of the NC State Firemans’ Association. All he had to do is swipe his debit card in the “Swipe the Card, Win the Truck” sweepstakes.

“When I first saw the sign at the credit union about the truck giveaway, I just sat there and stared at it for a minute and thought, ‘That’d be nice, but it won’t happen to me,” said Hancock, who is a volunteer and paid firefighter with the Town of Mint Hill and the City of Monroe, respectively, as well as a communications supervisor for the Mecklenburg County EMS Agency. “I’ve got a 1983 Chevrolet pickup right now, and it’s on its last legs. I’ve always wanted a new truck. This is incredible.”
