A Pineville man was struck by a car and killed on Independence Boulevard in Matthews Saturday night.  When officers arrived  they found the victim, Jack Anthony Sweeney (W/M d.o.b. 08/24/1982) of Pineville, N.C. lying in the center lane of U.S. 74. Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Sweeney was walking in the lanes of travel on Independence Blvd. when he was struck from the rear by a 2008 Chrysler Pacifica. The vehicle had just entered the highway from Matthews Township Parkway. After the initial contact, the victim was thrown to the inside lane and was then struck a second time by a 2007 Buick. The driver of the Pacifica was a nurse and the driver of the Buick was an on-duty NC Alcohol Law Enforcement agent. Neither driver of the two vehicles involved was injured in the crash.

Matthews Police traffic fatality investigators are continuing their investigation and no charges have been filed against either driver.
