Matthews honors Family Dollar Stores with key to the town

The Town of Matthews honored Family Dollar Stores, Inc. with a Key to the Town Monday night during a reception at the company’s headquarters in Matthews. In presenting the key Matthews Mayor Lee Myers commented, “This is the first time a corporate citizen has been honored with the key.” In his remarks Mayor Myers also spoke on the history of the company and how the retailer has been able to reach the milestone of celebrating 50 years of business.

Receiving the key was Howard Levine, Chairman and CEO of Family Dollar. “As our company has grown so has the Town of Matthews and it is a great place to do business,” said Mr. Levine.

During the event Howard Levine spoke of his family’s history of starting one small store and capitalizing on its success in order to expand to the over 6,600 stores the company now owns. “We have been able, to not only manage our success, but to thrive when many others have not been able to survive. We are always looking over our shoulder and mindful of our competition. It is one of the ways we are able to be a success,” he said.

Family Dollar is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Beginning with one store in Charlotte in 1959 the Company currently operates more than 6,600 stores in 44 states. A Fortune 500 Company, Family Dollar plans to open 200 stores in 2010 and was recently recognized at the New York Stock Exchange for their business success.

The Company has 45,000 team members – 1,800 who work at the headquarters and distribution center located in Matthews and 200 of whom reside in Matthews. Family Dollar opened their executive headquarters in Matthews in June of 1974 and the facility was recently renovated and expanded.
