Independence shows Can-do attitude

indycans3On Saturday, November 14, Independence students competed in the Can-Struction event for the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering Mentors club.  The event was from 9 am to 1 pm at the Independence Plaza on Trade and Tryon downtown.  The goal was to make a structure using only cans that can stand unsupported for a week.  The cans were donated by ACE mentors, Independence students and staff, and the Leo Club.   All cans will be donated to 2nd Harvest Metrolina Food Bank.

Independence students competed against Myers Parks and West Charlotte chapters of the ACE Mentors club.  Each school constructed an object; Myers Park made an iPhone and West Charlotte built a lion.  However, the Independence iPod was easily the most ambitious and technically challenging project of the event. The students learned several skills; such has using measurement, effective construction practices, and how to create design documents for projects.  Continue reading
