US Representative Sue Myrick (NC-09) has signed a letter drafted by House Minority Leader John Boehner to President Obama asking him to disclose and terminate all taxpayer funding of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, also known as ACORN.

“This is a matter of common sense and respect for taxpayer dollars,” the letter reads. “Last year, millions of Americans were outraged to learn their tax dollars were being used to subsidize an organization linked to multiple instances of voter registration fraud and other illicit activity.” Continue reading »

Independence started off the game with four turnovers in the first half but still held off West Charlotte Friday night.

Anthony Carrothers threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball in the first half. Kierre Brown also fumbled a punt return late in the second quarter. Despite the Patriot’s giveaways, West Charlotte was still shutout in the first half. Penalties were tacked on to each interception and the Lion’s offense stalled both times. “We need to be creating turnovers, we just haven’t been playing responsible and defensive football tonight.” said head coach Tom Knotts.

The Patriots limited running back Jalen “Scoot” Simmons and the West Charlotte offense to 169 yards, including 104 on the ground. Independence’s offense ended up with 450 yards for the night.

Running back Nyjee Fleming had a big night for the Patriots on offense. He ran for two touchdowns and turned a screen pass into a 55-yard gain that set up another touchdown early in the second half. He ran for 125 yards Friday night, 92 of which came in the first half. “He runs hard,”said Knotts.”He reminds me of Brian Knuckles back when I was at West Charlotte in the early ’90s.” Continue reading »

It looked bleak for the Butler Bulldogs at the beginning of the fourth quarter in Friday’s win over defending state champs Richmond County in Rockingham. The Bulldogs fell behind 31-17 when Quayshawn Dumas caught a six-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tedarrius Wiley with 11 minutes left in the game. Up to that point, the Raiders had scored on every series of the game except the first, and Butler looked like it might have a long drive back home.
Then came big plays on offense, and the defense which looked like a new team, and Bulldogs pulled out an improbably 38-31 win.
Coach Mike Newsome said he had to pick his team up after the Raiders took the two-touchdown lead.
“We (the coaching staff) had to get on them a little bit about not being ready to play,” Newsome said. “We had to show them that all we needed was one play. And once we scored the touchdown in the fourth quarter, they realized we can make it happen.”
The Bulldogs needed just three plays before Anthony Short caught a 19 yard touchdown pass form Christian LeMay to make it a 31-24 game. The defense then did its part, forcing the Raiders to turn the ball over on downs, and setting up another scoring drive.
“Our defense came out in the second half and shut down a really, really good offense,” Newsome said. “I thought they played tremendously in the second half and allowed us to make the big plays on offense.” Continue reading »

Students at Albemarle Road Middle School watch the Obama speech.

• Lacey Hampton reports on how Mint Hill area schools dealt with the controversial speech by president Obama. Local principals said very few students opted out of watching the speech.
• Speaking of Obama’s speech, columnist Leslie Southerland, a former CMS teacher and now an administrator at Queen’s Grant Prep School, said she didn’t see a whole lot she disagreed with in the speech.
• Tim Long reports on Independence High School’s big win over national powerhouse South Pointe last weekend. He also takes a look at this week’s game against West Charlotte as well as Butler’s game at Richmond County tonight.
• The Times editorial this week discusses how 9/11 will never be put to rest until those who masterminded it, in particular Osama bin Laden, are brought to justice.

“Non violence has its place in society. But in this case, where terrorists shattered lives and senses of security, we must never forget.”
