Preliminary results show that more than 100 schools made Adequate Yearly Progress in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools during the 2008-2009 year. But district officials cautioned that changes in state rules this year may have allowed many schools to clear the bar, and those gains could disappear next year.
The state’s preliminary calculation, based on end-of-year testing and other school measurements, showed that 111 of 163 schools measured at CMS made Adequate Yearly Progress as defined by the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The new rules that helped many schools clear the bar this year will not have the same impact on next year’s results, and the CMS superintendent said that this year’s results should be read in full context. The Mint Hill Grill and Deli will serve as the central Mint Hill collection site for School Tools 2009, the eighth annual campaign to collect new school supplies for students in the Charlotte region, August 1 – 31. There are more than 80,000 students living in poverty in the Charlotte region and many of these students will show up on the first day of school empty handed.
“We encourage everyone to stop by and help us fill up the boxes for this worthwhile project,” said Tom Daly, co-owner and general manager of the restaurant. “Our Mint Hill citizens have come out in broad support for School Tools the past six years, and we expect that our boxes will be full well before the end of the official campaign.” The collection boxes are located just inside the restaurant. US Representative Sue Myrick (NC-09) will offer an amendment next week to the health care reform bill currently being marked-up in the Energy and Commerce Committee.
