CMS notes: Registering for school, Merit Scholars, and surplus auction

Still haven’t registered your child for school? It’s not too late. Also, CMS announced its Merit Scholars for this year–none from Butler or Independence, however. Finally, CMS’ surplus auction ends this Friday. Better hurry if you want some deals.

Don’t forget to register: If you’re new to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area and you haven’t registered your children for school yet, what are you waiting for? Families can stop by the Family Application Center (700 Marsh Rd) Monday – Thursday from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Families will need to bring the following items: certified birth certificate, immunization records and three proofs of residency (utility bill or mortgage/lease agreement). If you have questions, call the Student Placement Office at 980-343-5335 or email them at: student.placement@cms.k12.nc.us. School will begin Tuesday, Aug. 25.

2009 National Merit Scholars named: The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named 21 CMS graduates as 2009 National Merit Scholars. The winners are among 8,200 distinguished high school graduates from across the country who received the prestigious college scholarships worth $36 million for undergraduate study. Myers Park High School led CMS with seven students receiving scholarships. Students from Ardrey Kell, North Mecklenburg, Northwest School of the Arts, Providence and Renaissance School at Olympic high schools also received scholarships. For more information, click here.

Summer meals: The summer food service program continues through Friday, August 7 at more than 120 sites in Mecklenburg County. The program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will provide free meals at several open sites to all children who live in the county. These sites include most CMS schools and some churches, YMCA branches and summer camp programs. Children must meet the national school lunch program income guidelines to be eligible to receive free meals at closed locations. Families who have questions should call CMS Child Nutrition Services at 980-343-6041. Click here for a list of meal locations, dates and times of operation. CMS has been participating in the program for more than 30 years.
