Teens could win cash prize in Public Library’s first teen talent competition

Take The Stage, the Public Library’s first talent competition for teens, is on a quest to find talented 12-18 year-olds. Teens that can sing, dance, or perform spoken word are needed to share their flair with the community. A $100 prize awaits the winner of the grand finale, set for August 8 at 2 p.m. at ImaginOn. Grand finale participants will also have the chance to meet Power 98 D.J. Jeanine Davis, who will host the event. The following libraries will hold first-round auditions for Take The Stage:

7/13, 6 p.m., South County Regional
7/21, 3:30 p.m., North County Regional
7/23, 3:30 p.m., University City Regional
7/27, 4 p.m., Freedom Regional
7/30, 6 p.m., Independence Regional

Suspect sought in Matthews theft

qs5Matthews Police are seeking a suspect in an auto break-in at Quantum Security, located off Independence Boulevard. A suspect broke into a company van and stole a number of cordless power tools. Security cameras at the site were able to capture photos of the suspect. Continue reading

Back-to-school hotline to open July 20

The Red PhoneCharlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will open the back-to-school information hotline (980-343-5335) on Monday, July 20. Customer-service representatives will answer questions from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday (CMS is on a four-day work week through Aug. 13). On Monday, Aug. 17, the information hotline will begin operating Monday through Friday through Sept. 4. The operating hours will remain the same. The media is invited to visit the information hotline center (1609 Alleghany St.) for interviews and photo opportunities on July 20 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.
The information hotline provides parents and families with information on student assignment and enrollment, child-nutrition services and bell schedules. This year, 22 customer-service representatives will provide information in English or Spanish. Nearly 25,000 calls were answered from the hotline and nearly 1,000 e-mails were answered last year.
Families can also visit the Family Application Center (700 Marsh Road) to obtain student-assignment and enrollment information or on the CMS Web site, www.cms.k12.nc.us.
