Summer graduation to be held August 3

CMS will hold two summer commencement ceremonies for 390 graduates on Monday, Aug. 3. The ceremonies will be held at Bojangles’ Coliseum (2700 E. Independence Blvd.) at 10 am and 1 pm.

$5,000 grant opportunity for local artists

Performing and literary artists can apply for up to $5,000 to support their artistic development through the Regional Artist Project Grant program.

The grant application deadline is Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at noon. Applications and guidelines are available at www.ArtsAndScience.org.

Artists who have lived in the counties of Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Rutherford, and York for one year are eligible to apply. Continue reading

Civitan Club begins in Matthews

A new Civitan Luncheon club is forming in Matthews. Club organizers invite community residents to attend organizational meetings held at Beantown Tavern. The club meets on Wednesdays from 12 till 1 pm. Once the club becomes officially chartered, the meetings will change to twice a month.

Civitan is a worldwide organization of everyday citizens who want to make a difference in their community. Members enjoy personal and professional development opportunities while focusing on helping others. Civitan’s major emphasis is to help people with development disabilities. Civitan funds the Civitan International Research Center, a developmental disability research and treatment facility located at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Continue reading
