Jerry and Sue Helms, the founders of the Children’s World Museum, will present an overview of the museum to the Matthews town council tonight. Jerry Helms said last week he had a few locations in mind to move the museum. The museum was closed abruptly last week after Helms got word that the Mint Hill was not going to help with funding. The museum was costing around $4,000 a month to operate, most of that in rent money. Here’s the rest of the Matthews meeting agenda for tonight: Continue reading »

The Carolina Blues

The Carolina Blues

The Carolina Blues were all smiles last weekend after capturing the first place trophy for the “One Day Shoot-out” sanctioned by the AAU girl’s fast-pitch softball organization, in Concord, N.C.
The Blues are Mint Hill-Indian Trail-Matthews girls who play girls fast-pitch tournament travel ball in the 16U age bracket.
They won four out of five games played and won the tournament championship by defeating the Stanly County Fireballs 4-3. The Fireballs had beaten the Blues, their only loss, earlier in the day, 5-1.
This is the Blues first  tournament win in the young summer season.  They are planning on bringing home more of the “bling” as the summer progresses. Continue reading »

The Town of Matthews released a statement today in support of CMS’s Tuesday vote to postpone the decision on the boundaries for the new Mint Hill high school.

“We have been hearing from people that the plans were never on the CMS Web site and there had not been an opportunity to fully discuss the impacts of the proposed pupil assignment plans on area high schools,” said Mayor Lee Myers. “We hope that the public will take advantage of this delay by CMS and visit www.cms.k12.nc.us  and click 2010-2011 School Boundary to become fully informed on what changes are proposed.”
CMS held two official public workshops, one at Independence High School and the other at Butler High School earlier this year. The three community maps, combined with the five maps generated by CMS staff,  have been on the CMS Web site for more than a month.

Mint Hill’s boundary map, designed by town staff as well as a hand-picked committee by Mayor Ted Biggers, was voted down at Tuesday’s meeting. The map was not posted on the CMS Web site, but has been available on several other Web sites including minthilltimes.com.

Matthews Mayor Pro-Tem Jim Taylor said Matthews wants two great schools, one in Matthews and one in Mint Hill, but the two towns differ on the approach.

“We’ve all got the same ultimate goal in mind, it’s just how we get there,”  Taylor  said. “Any plan that is to be considered by the CMS Board should be fully disclosed and allow for all families that will be impacted to weigh in before action is taken. That is the only way to be completely transparent and for the decision making process to be fair to all.”

Currently, most of Mint Hill CMS high school students attend Butler. Mayor Myers said after Tuesday’s meeting that Mint Hill’s boundary plan will have an adverse affect on Butler High School.

“It changes the demographics that we worked hard on improving,” Myers said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will receive $122,137.34 to replace cafeteria equipment at three high schools, including Independence High School. The money will come through the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) (also called federal stimulus funding).
CMS applied for the ARRA grant in May; the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education approved the application at its June 9 meeting. CMS requested $136,825.76 and was awarded $122,137.34. The grant requires funds to be used to purchase equipment for preparing and serving school meals, each piece of equipment to cost at least $5,000, and the money to be spent by Sept. 15. Preference was given to schools where more than 50 percent of students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
CMS will use the funds to replace outdated hot and cold serving equipment at Garinger, Independence and West Charlotte high schools. All three schools are still using serving lines that were installed more than 30 years ago: Garinger in 1976, Independence in 1967, and West Charlotte in 1979.
“The cafeterias at Garinger and Independence were scheduled for renovations from bond money a couple of years ago, but that money had to be used for other purposes,” said Cindy Hobbs, director of Child Nutrition Services. “We are thrilled to receive this funding to replace the old equipment.”
The new serving lines are set for installation this summer, to be ready for the upcoming school year.

Members of the Mint Hill community arrive at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting.

The CMS Board of Education voted tonight 4-3 to delay a final vote until August 11. An earlier vote for the Mint Hill-Reedy Creek school boundary map was voted down 4-2 by the board. At Larger member Trent Merchant proposed delaying the vote, but other board members did not know what will change in the next few weeks before a final decision.
More than 100 supporters of the Mint Hill-Reedy Creek map attended the meeting, most wearing white shirts and carrying signs which read “One High School for Mint Hill.” Read more about the meeting in Thursday’s Mint Hill Times.
