On June 22, 2009, two Mint Hill Eastern Star and Masonic Scholarship Awards in the amount of $2,000.00 each were presented to Jamie Porter and Hannah Heath by Melanie Carriker, Worthy Matron and Ken Carriker, Worthy Patron of Mint Hill Chapter #353 and John Trail, Master of Mint Hill Lodge #742. Jamie is the daughter of Paul and Katy Porter of Mint Hill. Hannah is the daughter of Richard and Deborah Heath of Mint Hill. Jamie and Hannah are recent graduates of Butler High School  and were congratulated for being outstanding students  in the community. These awards were made possible by an annual fish fry fundraiser.

Following the presentations, everyone gathered in the Mint Hill Masonic Lodge dining hall for fellowship and refrestments.

Fire at East Coast Container Corporation quickly contained

There was a fire at East Coast Container Corporation Monday around 4:45 p.m. The business is located in the 3200 block of Campus Ridge Road. The fire started in the office area and spread to the paint booths. At no time was there a problem with the air quality in the area. Two firefighters were treated on the scene for heat related issues. The fire was extinguished quickly and there were no other injuries reported.

Matthews Fire & EMS Department was assisted by Providence Fire Department, Stallings Fire Department, and the Charlotte Fire Department Haz-Mat Team.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

CMS offers summer meals for kids

The summer food service program runs through Friday, August 7 at more than 120 sites in Mecklenburg County. The program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will provide free meals at several open sites to all children who live in the county. These sites include most CMS schools and some churches, YMCA branches and summer camp programs. Children must meet the national school lunch program income guidelines to be eligible to receive free meals at closed locations. Families who have questions should call CMS Child Nutrition Services at 980-343-6041. Click here for a list of meal locations, dates and times of operation. CMS has been participating in the program for more than 30 years.

Matthews Mayor Lee Myers will not seek 10th term

mayor-lee-myersTown of Matthews Mayor Lee Myers announced today he will not seek a 10th term.  Myers has served as mayor of the town for 18 years – currently he is the longest serving active mayor in Mecklenburg County.

Myers was first elected to the Matthews Town Council in 1987. He completed two terms as a council member before he was elected mayor in 1991. He has served continuously as Mayor since that time.

“I have always stood for openness and fairness in government; professionally managed and operated government; visionary and progressive government; government that promotes citizen participation and volunteerism and securing a fair share of regional revenues,” he said.

Born April 19, 1951 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina to Charles T. Myers, attorney and former Mecklenburg County Commissioner and Dottie Myers. Mayor Myers is married to Lucinda and the father of two grown children, Matthew and Amanda.

Mayor Myers graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in 1969. He received a B.A. from East Carolina University in 1973 and a Juris Doctorate Degree from Oklahoma City University School of Law in 1976. Mayor Myers has practiced law in Mecklenburg County from 1976 to the present. He currently practices with his son, Matthew Myers, forming the Myers Law Firm, PLLC.
