Mint Hill Masonic Lodge celebrates 40 years

Mint Hill Masonic Lodge (#742) celebrated its 40th anniversary two weeks ago. The Lodge has steadily grown over the 40 years from 109 charter members in 1969 to 454 present members. In the pictures:

Two scholarship winners from Independence announced

The AVID Program at Independence High School is proud to announce that two students have been named Dell Scholars by the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation. Breanne Ross and Ketwanna Clifton each will receive a $20,000 scholarship to aid them as they pursue their college education. Breanne will attend Appalachian State University and Ketwanna will attend Catawba College in Salisbury. The two Patriot seniors are part of 300 others around the country awarded the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation’s scholarship.

Crestdale to be recognized as a School to Watch

Crestdale Middle staff and students will celebrate being named a “School to Watch” today at 1 pm. The national award recognizes middle schools for success in four areas: academic achievement, adolescent development, equitable education and organizational processes for academic growth. Special guests at today’s celebration include Board of Education member Ken Gjertsen, Superintendent Dr. Peter C. Gorman and Area Superintendent Nancy Bartles.

Regulation of beauty pageants for girls 13 and under?

A bill proposed by Rep. Mobley would study the regulation of beauty pageants for girls 13 and under in North Carolina. From the bill:

SECTION 2. The Committee shall study the regulation of beauty pageants for youth under 13 years of age in North Carolina. In conducting the study, the Committee shall consider issues related to the following:

(1)        How youth under 13 years of age are affected by competing in beauty pageants, both positive and negative.

(2)        Any data regarding regulation of the beauty pageant industry in this State as related to youth under 13 years of age.

(3)        Legislation adopted by other states addressing the regulation of beauty pageants for youth under 13 years of age.

(4)        The appropriate agency to regulate the beauty pageant industry for youth under 13 years of age in this State.

(5)        The criteria under which beauty pageants for youth under 13 years of age should be regulated in this State, including minimum age requirements of participants, requirements for parental involvement, and any restrictions as related to the use of excessive makeup and competition focus areas.

(6)        Any other issues the Committee considers relevant to the study.

Proud moms alert: two from area win scholarships

Kayla Tackett won a $1,000 scholarship last week at the Pop Warner Scholarship Tribute in Winston Salem, N.C.  Kayla was a first team scholar, meaning she was ranked in the top 2 percent of 410,000 children that took part in the scholars programs.  The $1,000 scholarship came from the Mecklenburg County Optimist Club, Daniel R. “Doc” Watson Memorial Scholarship and Pop Warner and will be kept in a reserve fund for her.  Continue reading

Five men arrested for armed robbery in Mint Hill

Mint Hill Police, with the help of CMPD, arrested five men in connection with an armed robbery Wednesday at the Colonial Village at Greystone Apartments (9610 Stoney Glen Drive). Two firearms were found inside the suspect vehicle. Nico Buckle and Guy Maldonado were charged with Armed Robbery of a Person and Conspiracy to Commit a Felony. Buckle has been arrested five times in the past year and a half, while Maldonado has been arrested six times in the past year and half, including larceny last month. Continue reading
