In an effort to recognize its exceptional teachers, charter school operator, National Heritage Academies (NHA), established the NHA Excellence in Teaching Award. The award is presented annually to recognize and affirm the accomplishments of individual teachers across NHA’s 57 charter schools. Carla Collier, Regan Adam, Heather Sizemore and Wanda Williams, teachers at Queen’s Grant Community Charter School in Mint Hill and residents of Midland, Locust, Concord, and Mint Hill, respectively, were among this year’s finalists for the 2008 Excellence in Teaching award. Each of NHA’s more than 2,000 teachers was reviewed against a set of quantitative and qualitative criteria including student test scores and achievement data, parent satisfaction surveys and classroom observations. Based on their ranking among the criteria, a total of 60 finalists were selected in four categories; K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and intervention services. Four winners were selected from the group of finalists.

“Our teachers are the drivers for the continued academic, social and personal growth of our students,” said Aric Dershem, Vice President of People Development for National Heritage Academies. “With such an exceptional team of passionate and dedicated educators committed to our vision to better educate more students, it was difficult narrowing it down to only 60 finalists. We are extremely proud of our staff and are grateful for their steadfast commitment to make a difference in the lives of the students we are privileged to serve.”
Winners of the Excellence in Teaching Award receive a $1,000 gift certificate to be used to purchase supplies/materials for their classroom, in addition to an all-exclusive trip to Jamaica or a complete home computer system.
Mrs. Carla Collier was the winner in the K-2 category with National Heritage Academies. She is a Kindergarten Teacher at Queen’s Grant along with two other finalists in the same category who also teach kindergarten, Mrs. Regan Adam and Mrs. Heather Sizemore and Mrs. Wanda Williams is a 2nd grade teacher at the school.
