The Mint Hill Lions Club raised more than $400 to send a care package to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Division stationed in Afghanistan. They are based in Camp Lejeune, N.C. Bob Mann, a Korean War veteran, spearheaded the effort because he heard the marines who are fighting in the mountains of Afghanistan don’t have access to post exchanges or commissaries. They mainly live in tents and have to endure not only difficult terrain and life-threatening situations, but temperature swings that can go from 72 degrees in the day, to minus 20 at night. The Mint Hill Lions donated hand, foot and toe warmers, batteries, a DVD player, DVDs of the 12 Greatest Westerns, 48 packs of playing cards, snacks that can be mixed with water, paper, pens, envelopes, and beef jerky. Vincent Saccardi, who owns a frame shop at Stonecrest, accepted the donations and will have them delivered to the troops. His son Cpl. Joseph Saccardi has served two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
