Patriots quiet Lions’ roar

Lawrence Martin owned the night. Martin caught six passes for 211 yards, two touchdowns and he threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to tight end Sebastian Green on a wide receiver pass. Head coach Tom Knotts said Martin also wasn’t too shabby on defense.

“We have to use him both ways, and he probably is one of the top five players in Charlotte,” he said. “It’s hard to play both ways, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Throwing a touchdown pass to Green felt better to Martin than catching two touchdown passes. The play was in the gameplan last week for the Patriots match-up against Madison County (Fla.) High.

“I didn’t think we would run it, but Coach called it, and I just concentrated and dumped it off to him. Just play catch with him,” Martin said.

Anthony Carrothers also had a great night. He completed 16 passes for 367 yards and one touchdown. The junior quarterback also rushed for two more scores and threw two interceptions.

Martin, Carrothers and Independence owned the night, but kickoffs belonged to linebacker Zach Hodges. Hodges, who attended his mother’s funeral today with his teammates, was seen bouncing in the huddle before kickoffs trying to pump up his team.

“I had a whole lot of support, especially from my friends and family, and that was really good for me,” he said. “I always love to get excited about kickoffs, that’s my favorite thing. It was mostly being able to come out here and play with my friends, and all the support I got from everybody.”

Hodges finished with two tackles.
