Big I rallies after shaky start

[singlepic=160,240,160,,right]Independence (3-0) got off to a rocky start Friday against Vance. Quarterback Anthony Carrothers completed only one of his first six passes as the Patriots failed to score on the opening drive for the first time this year.

“We just weren’t on the same page,” head coach Tom Knotts said. “We just kept perservering, and the defense stopped them.”

The Patriots and Carrothers rallied after an interception by defensive back Breon Thornton on the Vance 1. The Big I marched down the field in eight plays on the ensuing drive, scored its first touchdown of the night and never looked back.

Butler-West Charlotte on radio tonight

The Butler-West Charlotte football game at Lion Stadium tonight will be broadcast live by WFNZ 610 AM radio. The game begins at 7 pm. The Bulldogs have never beaten the Lions going back to when Tom Knotts coached in the late 1990s. Last season, West Charlotte stunned an undefeated Butler team in week 4 when they beat the Bulldogs in Matthews. The game was eventual forfeited by West Charlotte because of eligibility issues, but coach Mike Newsome said that doesn’t matter to the players who want to win it legitimately on the field.

“We’re talking to our kids about doing something we’ve never done,” Newsome said.
