[singlepic=39,200,120,,right]Independence football players collected $1,349 to donate to the United Services Organization. The players were at seven businesses in and around Mint Hill. The players also collected disposable cameras, magazines and phone cards. The items will be presented September 26 to the USO during halftime of the Independence vs. Myers Park football game. Independence team mom Teresa Oliver, one of the collection effort organizers, said Independence has contacted Myers Park about participating in the USO collection.

Oliver said that night is about Independence and Myers Park working together instead of a rivalry.

For those who missed the collection Saturday, Oliver will be in the school’s main hall every Thursday and Friday between 10 am and 1 pm to collect more items, and it ends September 26. USO is a nonprofit organization committed to providing morale, welfare and recreational services to soldiers. Service members and their families visit USO center more then 5.3 million times each year.
