Speaking of demolishing existing structures to build something new and improved (see town hall post) Ty and company from Extreme Makeover are going to demolish a house on Sudbury Road (near Eastland Mall) today and rebuild it in seven days. Meanwhile, the King family, owners of the house, will vacation in Puerto Rico for the week.

Rib Hillis interviews one of the kids for the program.

Seven days? Wow. Stay tuned for pics…

Extreme Makeover Press release:

Today, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” traveled to Charlotte to announce to the King Family that their home infected with a hazardous mold that’s threatening their community as well as their children’s health will be demolished and rebuilt in only seven days.
A single mother at age 15, Alisha King understands the importance of having a support system of family and friends during parenthood. She received help while raising Justin and was able to work several part time jobs and attend college. Her dream has always been to give single parents a safe, nurturing, and affordable daycare that provides clothing, food, overnight care, mentoring, and constant education to the children. Her marriage to co-worker Curtis King in 1997 led to the birth of Kirkland and a new residence in Charlotte, North Carolina; where she finally opened “Step By Step Home Daycare.” Though Alisha and Curtis went through many financial hardships, they always managed to selflessly give back to their community and maintain their daycare. Today they have 11 children in their daycare system on the clock and many in their home after hours, free of charge. However, the condition of their home is putting their daycare and daughter Laila’s health in jeopardy. The mold has sent her to the hospital several times with asthma attacks, and it does not pose a healthy environment for the rest of the children when combined with the cramped quarters, and lack of heat, air conditioning, and gas. It is up to Ty and his designers to step in to save their home and daycare center that continuously helps the community.
While Ty and the designers, local builder American Heartland Homebuilder and developer JED Development, and hundreds of volunteers and workers are rebuilding their home, the King family will go on vacation to Puerto Rico.
This is the second time American Heartland Homebuilder has been asked by the show to build a home for a family in need. The builder also contributed in 2006 for a family in Detroit.
The design team for this episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” will feature team leader Ty Pennington and designers Michael Moloney, Ed Sanders, Rib Hillis and Didiayer Snyder.
The location address is: The King Family, 4214 Sudbury Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28205.

A design for Mint Hill’s new town hall could be approved by the Board of Commissioners tonight. The new town hall is a two-story structure made of brick—something more traditional than the current structure—but there are no specific design details yet.

The board discusses the project at 6:30 pm in town hall with architect David Creech and his team. The public can attend, but it cannot comment during the meeting.

Find out how the project progresses July 31 in The Mint Hill Times.

Mint Hill native Tiffany Hacker, who the Mint Hill Times featured three weeks ago, got a nice little story on the CMS web site Friday. Hacker won the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship and is using it to study murals in Southeast Asia. She currently attends the National University of Singapore where she is working on a second master’s degree.

In last week’s Mint Hill Times, Hacker wrote a guest column on why it is good for college students to study in Asia.

Independence High School rising senior Robbie Tucker, who was killed Thursday when struck by a car while walking home from a friend’s house, was buried today.

On Friday, two of Robbie’s friends,  Sydney Leibert (left) and Jessica Burkett painted the Big I rock in front of the school to pay tribute.

General Growth claims the off-site and on-site work were not in sync, and that grading was going too fast. Urban Planet forum posters express doubt about the reasons given for the halt of Bridges at Mint Hill construction at Lawyers Road and I-485. The poster says:

That’s an interesting excuse and it’s rubbish. It’s no doubt due to the economy and the fact that General Growth, the developer, is having major issues in these seized up capital markets trying to get refinancing on its $billions of debt maturing over the next two years. Being that the company is now devoting full attention to its existing stabilized portfolio of malls, I predict this project will be on hold until 2010 at the earliest or may just outright die.

Mall developers told Town Manager Brian Welch construction will begin again at the first of the year. Stay tuned…

Myrtle Grove Optimist bounced Mint Hill little league from the state tournament last night. Team Mint Hill was one game away from going to the Southeast Regional in Gulfport, Fla., and from there a  trip  to Williamsport, Pa. for the Little League World Series.

Getting to the state championship game is an accomplishment, so nothing to hang their heads about. You’ll get’em next year!

Butler’s most prominent football recruit Hawatha Bell will visit four schools this fall, including UNC and NC State.

Common Hawatha, keep your talent in state!

Of all the high profile Butler Bulldogs recruits last season, none stayed in state. Can’t blame them too much for wanting to play for Clemson, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Illinois, but it would be nice to keep some of that homegrown talent in NC for a change.

CMS Deputy Superintendent and Chief Operating Officer Maurice Green was named superintendent of Guilford County Schools this morning.

Dr. Gorman’s statement:

“Guilford County has made a great decision by selecting Mo Green as their new superintendent. While we’d love to keep him here, he deserves this opportunity. I know great things are going to happen for children because he’s there.”

Will the blood ever stop in the investigations of high school sports programs in CMS? This time it’s East Meck in the news. The school was hit with recruiting, practice and eligiblity violations. In addition to the suspension of the coach until September 2, the suspension of an assistant coach for two years, the loss of the AD, and a $7,000+ fine, the school will have to forfeit its 2007 season.

Will it ever end?

The Bridges at Mint Hill halted grading yesterday, but no worries. Town Manager Brian Welch met with mall officials Wednesday night and they told him the onsite work got ahead of the offsite work. Work at the construction site will begin again sometime at the beginning of next year. Welch also said the mall officials told him they are still 100% committed to building the mall.

More on the mall in the July 31 edition of the Mint Hill Times.
